Field Trip to Sloss Furnace

We had a great trip to Sloss Furnace!

Our guides name was Heather and she was fabulous!

These look like a pretty water fountain but actually it helped keep things cooled off because the iron was so hot.

She taught us all about the history of Sloss Furnace.

She took us down in the spooky tunnels too.

It was scary but fun!

Sloss furnace doesn't work anymore but it is a piece of Birmingham history.

We see it from the highway all the time so it was neat to go inside and learn about it.

We even got to have a picnic. Yum!

Boosterthon Fun Run

Today was our big fundraiser!!!! The boosterthon Fun Run!

We have been getting pledges for a week and a half.

Our family and friends pledge money for each lap we run.

Yes, our team name is....The Fighting Frogs :) I didn't know frogs fought but apparently they do in a first graders mind!

And we're off!

We started with some warm ups.

Then we started our laps.

We got a mark on our shirt for each lap we ran or walked....if I were doing it I would have to have added crawled:)

The whole time we ran, the boosterthon guys reminded us of our EPIC adventure!

E- encourage    P-play     I-invite    C- celebrate

After we were finished, we cooled off with some Popsicles.

Everyone loves Popsicles!

We had an amazing time today!

Scientific Method: Testing Popcorn

First, we asked a question: Which popcorn gives the most popped kernels?

Then, we formed a hypothesis by looking at the different kinds of popcorn and discussing what we thought about the differences.

Some thought the butter would keep the kernels from popping and others thought it would help pop more of them.

We tested out hypothesis by popping: Light popcorn, Natural Popcorn, Buttered Popcorn and Kettle Popcorn. The best part of all...we got to eat the popcorn!

We came to a conclusion and shared our data with others.

The Scientific Method: Band-Aid Testing

Testing out band-aids....first we asked a question. Which band-aid will stick the best in water?

Next, we made a hypothesis.

We tested our hypothesis.

We came to a conclusion and shared our information with others.

Testing Toothpaste

First we asked a question....Which toothpaste will whiten the best?
We made a hypothesis.

We tested our hypothesis.

Then we came to a conclusion.

Last, we shared our results with others.

Animal Unit

While studying about animals, we collaborated with our art teacher, Mrs. Scott.

First, we drew our animals step by step to make a pattern on paper.

Next we traced the pattern pieces onto cardboard and cut them out.

We glued the cardboard pieces together....

See, they look just like the animals we have been researching.

We then put them on the drying rack.

Now it is time to paint!

We have to mix just the right colors to make our animals look real!

We paint all the edges too.

We are having so much fun!

On the drying rack they go. We will come back another day to put on the details.
